Ashby and TrueRole both help teams evaluate candidates. Ashby includes evaluation tools within its recruiting platform. TrueRole focuses on understanding how candidates fit a role, what supports that assessment, and what still needs to be checked.
You can use TrueRole on its own. Create a role, upload candidate résumés, and review their evidence without connecting an applicant tracking system (ATS). If you already use Ashby, you can also consider TrueRole alongside it.
This guide looks at what each offers and how to decide whether you need one or both. Product details were checked on October 6, 2026.
What Ashby offers
Ashby's AI-assisted application review checks applicants against job criteria and explains its findings. It can mark a result as uncertain, and teams can update criteria and run the review again. It also checks whether candidates answered selected application questions. Read Ashby's application review documentation.
Ashby also offers AI feedback summaries, a candidate assistant, a notetaker, and tools for finding past candidates. Include the features your team has access to when comparing the products. Explore Ashby's AI features.
If these tools give your team what it needs, keeping evaluation within Ashby can save the effort of managing another system.
How TrueRole approaches evaluation
TrueRole starts with the role's requirements and business context. It then evaluates candidate materials against those requirements, showing supporting evidence, gaps, and questions to follow up on.
A résumé is often the starting point. Work samples, portfolios, interview notes, and team feedback can add to the evaluation as hiring progresses. The aim is to help reviewers understand how new information affects their view of a candidate. See how TrueRole works.
You can add roles and candidates directly, so the same tools are available whether you use Ashby, spreadsheets, or another way of organizing hiring.
Both products offer criteria-based review and explanations. To decide whether to add TrueRole, focus on a part of candidate review your team finds difficult and try it in both products.
Try the same role and materials in both
Imagine you are hiring an engineer who will be responsible for production reliability. A candidate's résumé describes a migration, a technical write-up explains the architecture, and an interview explores their role in handling incidents.
Use the same criteria and materials in each product. Ask reviewers to find what supports the candidate's claims, separate their contribution from the team's work, and note any unanswered questions. Then add the interview notes and see how the assessment changes.
Compare how easily reviewers can find the relevant evidence, understand the reasoning, and discuss disagreements. This gives you a more useful basis for choosing than comparing scores alone.
Connecting TrueRole to Ashby
TrueRole supports importing roles and syncing candidate records from Ashby. Availability depends on your workspace and the permissions granted to the connection. It does not currently receive instant change notifications from Ashby or send evaluation results back automatically.
Before connecting, check which records and materials can be imported and how updates are retrieved. Some attachments, interview notes, or scorecards may need to be added separately. Agree on where your team will record hiring decisions and how it will transfer any findings back to Ashby.
Choosing one or both
Use TrueRole on its own if you want to create roles, add candidate materials, and evaluate candidates without adopting an ATS first.
Use Ashby's built-in tools if they already meet your evaluation needs and your team benefits from working in one system.
Consider both if trying TrueRole shows a useful improvement in a part of your review process. Include subscription costs, usage charges, setup, and any manual transfer work when weighing that improvement.
