Greenhouse vs TrueRole for candidate evaluation

Compare Greenhouse Talent Matching with TrueRole. Explore how they support candidate review and when to use TrueRole on its own or alongside Greenhouse.

By TrueRole · Published · Updated

Greenhouse helps teams manage recruiting and evaluate applicants, including through Talent Matching. TrueRole focuses on how candidates fit a role and how that assessment changes as the team learns more about them.

TrueRole does not require an applicant tracking system (ATS). You can create roles, upload candidate résumés, and review their evidence directly. If you already use Greenhouse, you can also use TrueRole alongside it.

The choice depends on what your team needs: an ATS, a candidate evaluation platform, or both. Product details in this guide were checked on October 6, 2026.

    What Greenhouse offers

Greenhouse Talent Matching uses hiring criteria and weights set by the team to group candidates by match. It keeps a history of changes to those criteria, and its assistant can use job descriptions and scorecard attributes to help set them up. Recruiters and hiring managers decide who advances or is rejected. Read the Greenhouse Talent Matching FAQ.

Talent Matching also explains why candidates match the selected criteria. Check which features your team can access under its plan and permissions. Explore Greenhouse Talent Matching.

When comparing products, include Greenhouse's interview and structured review tools as well. The initial match is one part of the hiring process.

    How TrueRole approaches evaluation

TrueRole brings role requirements, business context, and candidate evidence into a shared evaluation. Your team can review résumés and other materials, prepare interview questions around gaps, and add interview notes and feedback as hiring progresses. See how TrueRole works.

You can do this without connecting Greenhouse or any other ATS. Teams that organize hiring through email, documents, or spreadsheets can create roles and add candidates directly in TrueRole.

Both Greenhouse and TrueRole let teams work with criteria, review explanations, and make their own hiring decisions. If you already use Greenhouse, look for a specific review problem that TrueRole could help solve.

Follow a candidate from matching to interview

Imagine you are hiring a product leader. Experience launching a product matters, but the role also requires making difficult decisions with limited time and resources.

A candidate's résumé describes a launch. Their case study explains some of the decisions. After an interview, reviewers disagree about how much responsibility the candidate held.

Try reviewing that progression in Greenhouse and TrueRole. Can your team find the material that supports each conclusion? Can reviewers separate what the candidate said from what they demonstrated? Is it clear which questions still need an answer?

If you change the role criteria, also check whether reviewers can tell which criteria an assessment uses. The aim is to find the process that helps your team understand and discuss the evidence with less extra work.

    Connecting TrueRole to Greenhouse

TrueRole supports importing roles and syncing candidate records from Greenhouse. Availability depends on your workspace and the required Harvest API permissions. The connection does not currently receive instant change notifications from Greenhouse or send evaluation results back automatically.

Check which records and materials your workspace can import. Scorecards, later interview notes, and some attachments may need to be added separately. Agree on where decisions will be recorded and how reviewers will transfer any findings between the systems.

    Choosing one or both

Use TrueRole on its own if you need a place to evaluate candidates against a role without adopting an ATS first.

Use Greenhouse's built-in tools if Talent Matching and your existing review process already give the team the information it needs.

Consider both if a trial shows that TrueRole helps reviewers understand candidate evidence or keep their assessment up to date as hiring progresses. Weigh that benefit against the cost of both tools, setup, and any manual transfer work.
